  2. Exchanging old banknotes. There is no deadline to exchange old banknotes with the Bank of England. But it is usually easier and quicker to exchange notes at your own bank or at the Post Office. The Bank of England counter is open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 3pm (excluding Bank Holidays). Last entry at 2.45pm.

There are approximately £7 billion worth of paper £20 and £10.5 billion worth of paper £50 notes still in circulation.

After this date, paper £20 and £50 banknotes will no longer be legal tender.   6. Each banknote denomination is a different size. The higher the value of a note, the larger it is. On the front of the notes (the side with raised print), the value can be identified by the number of clusters of raised dots in the top left corner. The £5 has none, the £10 has two, the £20 has three and the £50 has four clusters.
