Overview. Between 1798 and 1826 Malthus published six editions of his famous treatise, updating each edition to incorporate new material, to address criticism, and to convey changes in his own perspectives on the subject.
Malthus's writings were also remarkable for their detailed exploration of the mechanisms by which various positive checks (acting via death rates) and preventive checks (operating on marriage and birth rates) regulated population growth in different societies and at different times.
