Robert Gerhard i Ottenwaelder was born in Valls, a village in the Catalan province of Tarragona, on 25 September 1896. In keeping with Catalan custom, he bore not only the name of his Swiss-German father, to whom he owed a Swiss passport, but also the name of his mother, who hailed from Alsace.
