Sunderland ( / ˈsʌndərlənd / ⓘ) is a port city [a] in Tyne and Wear, England. It is a port at the mouth of the River Wear on the North Sea, approximately 10 miles (16 km) south-east of Newcastle upon Tyne. The built-up area had a population of 168,277 at the 2021 census, making it the second largest settlement in North East England after Newcastle.

Sunderland is in North East England. It was a county borough, and is now part of the City of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear. It sits at the mouth of the River Wear . Sunderland started as three small villages: Monkwearmouth was created in 674 when Saint Benedict Biscop started a monastery.
Despite its long history, Sunderland didn't become a recognised city until 1992, on the 40th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's ascension to the British throne. Prior to this it had been considered a township. An Act of Parliament in 1809 was passed to create an Improvement Commission for Sunderland.
