The School moved to Greville Mount House, Kilburn and the name St John’s was adopted. This was the first of three moves before the School moved to Leatherhead in 1872. St John's was temporarily transferred to the Reverend L P Mercier’s School at Walthamstow.

The school was a success but the dual purpose imposed restrictions. Later, in 1854, the school moved outside the parish boundaries of St Mark's into neighbouring Kilburn. This was the first of three moves before the school moved to Leatherhead in 1872.
A talk by Richard Hughes in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the school’s move from London to Leatherhead in August 1872. When St John’s School moved out of central London to Leatherhead in August 1872 it was the school’s fourth move and fifth location in its short life of 21 years.

In 1854, the School moved outside the parish boundaries of St Mark's into neighbouring Kilburn. This was the first of three moves before the School moved to Leatherhead in 1872 with just 67 pupils. Since then the school has continued to expand and is now a community of over 850 pupils.

After various moves in London, the school transferred to its present site in Leatherhead, between Epsom Road and Linden Pit Path, in 1872. Initially the whole school, including accommodation for staff and pupils, was housed in the main building that fronts on to Epsom Road, although following a serious fire in 1913, it had to be rebuilt.
