The Gaol established in the 1880’s once stood in Gray Park, surrounded by high brick walls made at the Walgett Brick Works. The well from which water was drawn for the gaol is fenced in the centre of the park with a plaque. This gaol was on this site from 1881 to 1966.

   How did Walgett get its name?

   • The town of Walgett was proclaimed on 20 March 1885. The surveyor Arthur Dewhurst mapped the town, naming three streets after British Prime Ministers: Fox (main street—Castlereagh Highway), Pitt and Peel. Arthur Street was named after another surveyor. Walgett Courthouse was built in 1865.
