The message of the Lutheran and Reformed theologians has been codified into a simple set of five Latin phrases: Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone), Solus Christus (Christ alone), Sola Fide (faith alone), Sola Gratia (by grace alone) and Soli Deo Gloria (glory to God alone).

- Sola Gratia (Grace alone) Salvation is the free gift of God to man. It is given by God’s Grace alone and not through any merit on the part of the Christian.
- Sola Fide (Faith alone) We are judged righteous in the sight of God purely on the basis of our faith. The atoning sacrifice of Christ leads to righteousness being imputed to us as sinners through a legal declaration by God.
- Solus Christus (Christ alone) Christ is the one Mediator between God and man and our salvation is accomplished only through His death and resurrection.
- Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone) Scripture alone is the only infallible source of divine revelation and the final authority for matters of faith and practice.

- Sola Fide. Theology must be faith driven. Without faith, it is impossible to please God (Heb. 11:6). Like the empty hand of a beggar, faith reaches out to receive Christ.
- Sola Gratia. Theology must be grace-saturated. If we are saved by faith, then we are saved not by works but by grace alone (Rom. 11:6). Grace is God’s generous disposition by which He lavishes us with good things that we do not deserve.
- Sola Scriptura — Scripture Alone. The doctrine of Sola Scriptura, or scripture alone, is a central belief of Reformed Theology. It comes as no surprise to find that this doctrine also formed the bedrock of Spurgeon’s preaching.
- Sola Gratia — Grace Alone. Another aspect of Reformed Theology which finds sure footing in the text of Scripture is that salvation is available solely due to God’s grace.
- Sola Fide — Faith Alone. As seen above, Reformed Theology teaches that salvation is an act of God’s grace and cannot be earned. Rooted in this truth is Sola Fide, which teaches that faith is the sole instrument by which this saving grace is applied to the life of the individual.
- Solus Christus — Christ Alone. The sole object of our faith is Jesus Christ and His atoning work on the cross. As Spurgeon told his congregation on a Sunday morning in May of 1890, “Both feet must be on the Rock of Ages.”
