Havlíčkův Brod (Czech pronunciation: [ˈɦavliːtʃkuːv ˈbrot], until 1945 Německý Brod; German: Deutschbrod) is a town in Havlíčkův Brod District in the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 24,000 inhabitants. The historic town centre is well preserved and is protected by law as an urban monument zone.
The first written mention of Havlíčkův Brod on River Sázava dates back to the beginning of the 13th century. The settlement near the silver mines later became a town with royal rights. King Sigismund, the son of famous Czech king Charles IV, settled there during the Hussite Wars, but Jan Žižka, the Hussite leader, soon conquered the town.

The town which was first called Brod and later Smilův Brod (Ford of Smil), was renamed to Německý Brod (German Ford). At the beginning of the 14th century, the stone city walls were built, but later during the Hussite Wars in 1422 the city was burned down by Jan Žižka. The town was resettled in 1429 by Czech people.
