   When did Newstead Abbey get its name?

   • The Priory was surrendered on 21 July 1539 and immediately handed over to the custody of Sir John Byron of Colwick. In May 1540 Sir John bought the estate of Newstead for £840, converted the Priory into a manor house and lived there with his family. It seems that it was after this time that the Priory buildings became known as Newstead Abbey.

   When was Newstead Abbey built?

   • Newstead Abbey in 1880. Sir John Byron of Colwick in Nottinghamshire was granted Newstead Abbey by Henry VIII of England on 26 May 1540 and started its conversion into a country house. He was succeeded by his son Sir John Byron of Clayton Hall. Many additions were made to the original building.
