  2. In this article, we'll look at the basics of coaching in the workplace. We'll clarify what it involves, and review the key approaches that you can use to be a successful coach. We'll also review some situations where coaching can be useful, and look at some examples of coaching questions.

    • Be Proactive. The first three habits focus on developing your ‘self-mastery’. When you can master your own mindset and move into independence, that’s when true work can begin.
    • Begin with the end in mind. The second habit focuses again on priorities and your ability to organize your life based on your core goals. An effective person, or coach, always starts a task with the end goal in mind.

    • Build trust. This is the cornerstone of every coaching relationship. Whether we’re coaching employees or individual clients, we must show them we have faith in their abilities.
    • Listen more than you talk. It doesn’t matter how well developed our communication skills are; if we’re doing all the talking, our clients won’t make progress.
    • Be open to feedback. To be good at our jobs, implementing feedback into our coaching models helps us grow as coaches. We must listen to our clients with an open, flexible mindset when they tell us what’s working for them and what isn’t to adjust our programs to meet their needs.
    • Set attainable goals. Some people think an effective leader should set multiple, lofty goals to inspire others to achieve greatness. The opposite is true.
