The Puritan fervour waned toward the end of the 17th century, but the Great Awakening (c. 1720–50), America’s first great revival, under the leadership of Jonathan Edwards, George Whitefield, and others, revitalized religion in the North American colonies.

- The Great Awakening, 1734-43. In December 1734, the first revival of historic significance broke out in Northampton, Mass., where a young Jonathan Edwards was pastor.

Back in Britain a massive movement of revival had began and was bound up with the ministries of two young men, George Whitefield and John Wesley. Both had been members of the Holy Club in Oxford while they were students.
Each of these men would have argued that awakenings were the work of the Holy Spirit, but there was the increasing feeling that God invited men to cooperate with him by praying and preaching for revival. The stage was now set for a major shift in the methods of conducting awakenings.
