In the New Testament, God’s name is manifested most clearly in Jesus Christ. He is called “the Word” (John 1:1), and Jesus Himself makes the claim that He has revealed the name of God (John 17:6). God’s name is His promise to dwell with His people.

Part 1 Introduction. As we study the Bible, we become aware of the importance of names and their meaning in the ancient East. In that culture, the giving of a name had particular significance and people were frequently named or renamed for a characteristic or capacity the name wanted them to have.
The name of the Lord is given attributes of God, such as holy (1 Chronicles 16:10; Psalm 33:21) and wonderful (Judges 13:18). The name of God is commanded to be treated as God Himself (Psalm 103:1; Malachi 3:16). To call on the name of the Lord was the same as worshipping God (Genesis 12:8; 13:4; 21:33; 26:25).
Over the next three months, take the time to study these names of God from the Old Testament. Study the passages and observe the context of how the name of God is used. Write down what you discover and see if learning more about God's character doesn't help you in your daily walk.
