Based on the 1853 memoir of the same name by Soloman Northup, 12 Years a Slave follows the story of a free man who, in 1841, is kidnapped and sold into slavery.

Firstly, the Movie is based upon the memoir of the same name by Solomon Northup, which was first published in 1855 and whose historicity is generally accepted (the edition edited by Sue Eakins - who researched the work in great detail - contains a lot of additional supporting information and documentation).
