The film was originally scheduled to be released on February 12, 2016, but was pushed back to July 8. It was released in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D using DMR.[better source needed] The Secret Life of Pets premiered at the 2016 Annecy International Animated Film Festival on June 16 and was screened at VidCon. A Despicable Me short film, entitled Mower Minions, was attached to the film's theatrical release.
