Early life. Hawkes was born on September 11, 1959. He is the son of Patricia Jeanne (née Olson) and Peter John "Pete" Perkins, a farmer of wheat, corn, hogs and cattle. [1][2][3] He was raised in a "pastoral, small city... a midwest Scandinavian community." [4] .
Born and raised in rural Minnesota, Hawkes moved to Austin, Texas where he began his career as an actor and musician. He co-founded the Big State Productions theater company and appeared in the group's original play, "In the West" at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
