William Friedkin's The Exorcist is often cited as the scariest horror film ever made. Personally, I've never found the film to be all that scary (which could have something to do with the fact that I'm neither Catholic nor particularly religious), but there's no denying it's one of the best made genre films of all time.

That the film is so highly lauded (even amongst critics who generally view the horror film with something just below seething contempt) makes it all the more interesting that the sequels the film has spawned have been so terrible.

Sure, William Peter Blatty's Exorcist III is good (if for no other reason than because George C. Scott dominated every frame of the film with his gruff and no-nonsense demeanor), but Exorcist II: The Heretic still stands as one of the worst sequels ever committed to celluloid.
