The Astronauts developed out of a group, The Stormtroupers, which was originally formed at Boulder High School, Boulder, Colorado in 1956 by Jon "Storm" Patterson (vocals, guitar), Robert Graham "Bob" Demmon (guitar; born February 11, 1939), and Brad Leach (drums).
The classic Astronauts lineup—Rich Fifield (the only member who hadn’t graduated from Boulder High), Dennis Lindsey and Bob Demmon on guitars, Jon Storm Patterson on bass and drummer Jim Gallagher—played rock ‘n’ roll and R&B hits of the day to pre-hippie crowds around the University of Colorado campus circa 1962.

But regardless of any physical distance between the Rocky Mountains and NASA headquarters, it was the music they made that mattered...the Astronauts were hot. Besides, there was a perfectly logical reason for the name. Bob Demmon had wanted to be in a band since he was a kid.
So even though the landlocked group had never played surf music (or even surfed, for that matter), the classic Astronauts lineup—Rich Fifield, Dennis Lindsey and Bob Demmon on guitars, Jon Storm Patterson on bass and drummer Jim Gallagher—ended up with a long-term recording contract.
