If you need help paying the fee
You may be able to get help with fees if you get benefits or are on a low income. You can apply for this help online or with a paper form. If you apply for the help online, you’ll get a reference number. Use that reference number when you apply for a divorce so you do not have to pay the fee upfront. If you apply for the help with a paper form, you will not get a reference number. If you do not want to pay the fee upfront, apply for divorce by post and include your paper form with your divorce application. A decision will then be made about your application for help with fees. Depending on what’s decided, you may be asked to pay some or all of the fee. If you are making a joint divorce application and want help with paying the fee, you must both apply for help. If your husband or wife is not eligible or does not apply, you’ll have to pay the full fee.

- Decide who should apply. You can apply for a divorce or dissolution on your own or with your partner. If you do it on your own it’s called a sole application.
- Get the information and documents you’ll need. You’ll need your marriage or civil partnership certificate to help you fill in the details on the divorce or dissolution application - for example, the date of your marriage.
- Fill in the application. You can apply for a divorce or dissolution online or by post. When you fill in the application make sure you follow the instructions and complete it carefully.
- Check how your partner will be told about the application. Usually the court will send a copy of the divorce or dissolution application to your partner - this is also known as ‘serving divorce or dissolution papers’.

Deciding that your marriage has ended can be difficult. This guide is designed to give information about the law and procedure on divorce.
The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020 reforms the divorce process to remove the concept of fault (also known as 'no-fault divorce'). Many legal professionals felt that divorce law was out of date, particularly following Owens v Owens [2018] UKSC 41.
Learn about the different ways to legally end your relationship, such as divorce, dissolution, legal separation or annulment. Find out the requirements, costs and steps for each option and get advice on how to divide money, home and children.
