Lucy Page Mercer Rutherfurd was born April 26, 1891, in Washington, DC to a prominent Maryland Catholic family. She was educated in private schools, but because her family had very little money she had to go to work. In 1914, she became social secretary to Eleanor Roosevelt.
When FDR and Lucy, who was by then Mrs. Winthrop Rutherfurd, began to meet again in 1941, while ER was importuning FDR not to sacrifice social progress to military imperatives, Lucy was referring to him as “the Source I Do Not Question.”
Fdr’s sudden death was more of a surprise for Eleanor than it was for Lucy. In denial about the seriousness of his condition, Eleanor was not prepared for tragedy when she arrived as the keynote speaker at a charity event at Washington’s Sulgrave Club on April 12.
