Feb 10, 2023 · Stoney Middleton’s Lover’s Leap has featured prominently in Derbyshire folklore for centuries. A remarkable story which dates back to the mid 18th century, it centres on a heartbroken young lady who jumped from the village’s unforgiving gorges – and miraculously, and fortuitously, survived.
The gory side story aside, Lovers Leap is an impressive sight for sore eyes. Standing 30 metres tall, the cascading waterfall derives its water from the streams of the Piduruthalagala mountain. Nearby, you can spot the Shiva shrine beside the rocky facade.
Lover’s Leap, a headland 1.5km southeast of Southfield, is named for two young slaves who supposedly committed suicide here in 1747. Legend says the woman was lusted after by her owner, who arranged for her lover to be sold to another estate.
