After his death, El Cid became Spain's most celebrated national hero and the protagonist of the most significant medieval Spanish epic poem, El Cantar de mio Cid, [1] which presents him as the ideal medieval knight: strong, valiant, loyal, just, and pious.
The film is loosely based on the life of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, a 12th-century Castilian warlord who fought against the Moors. It stars Charlton Heston as El Cid and Sophia Loren as his wife Doña Jimena, and was nominated for three Academy Awards.
El Cid, who lived in the 11th century, is known as the national hero of Spain. He is remembered as a fierce champion of Christian Spain against Muslim and particularly Almoravid forces during the early years of the Reconquista and as the embodiment of knightly honour.
