Ginger Rogers plays Susan/Sue-Sue Applegate, a beautiful but broke small-town woman. Disgusted and exasperated with the effrontery of lecherous New York men, she disguises herself as a 12 year-old girl in order to travel half-fare home to Iowa.
Susan Applegate, tired of New York after one year and twenty-five jobs, decides to return to her home town in Iowa. Discovering she hasn't enough money for the train fare, Susan disguises herself as a twelve-year-old and travels for half the price.
When suspicious conductors catch her smoking a cigarette, Susan hides in the sleeper cabin occupied by Major Philip Kirby, a military boys' school instructor who is returning from Washington, D.C. after trying to get his military status reactivated.
