Karl Amadeus Hartmann (2 August 1905 – 5 December 1963) was a German composer. Sometimes described as the greatest German symphonist of the 20th century, he is now largely overlooked, particularly in English-speaking countries.

Er war der Begründer der Konzertreihe musica viva, der neben den Donaueschinger Musiktagen, den Ferienkursen in Darmstadt und den Wittener Tagen für zeitgenössische Musik bedeutendsten Konzertreihe der zeitgenössischen Musik mit Schwerpunkt auf der Orchestermusik.
Hartmann was not one of those composers who propagated new techniques, sounds and compositional strategies in post-war Germany. His composing reveals his interest in tradition: Renaissance music, Baroque, fugue, counterpoint, late Romanticism, Neoclassicism and Expressionism.
Karl Amadeus Hartmann is one of the most important composers of the 20th century. As the founder of “musica viva” – the most successful concert series for contemporary music, which still exists today – he is also a central figure for New Music in general.
Karl Amadeus Hartmann was born on 2 August 1905 in Munich and came into contact with art and music at an early stage. He studied trombone and composition at the Staatliche Akademie der Tonkunst in Munich from 1924 to 1929.
