Across his career, Dean scored 473 goals in 502 appearances for club and country. He was twice leading scorer in the First Division, and on both occasions Everton were crowned champions (Dean stayed with the club when they were relegated in between these two victories in 1928 and 1932).

Dean first worked as a railway apprentice but at age 16 turned to professional soccer and at 17 played for the Tranmere Rovers. In the 1924–25 season he scored 27 goals in 27 matches.
He scored 164 of his 383 Everton goals in the 20s (this tally includes six Charity Shield strikes, not included in some record books). In the 1930s he captained the club to an unprecedented treble of Second Division, First Division and FA Cup triumphs.
