Georg Alexander was born in Nice, France, the eldest son of the then Count George of Carlow and his first wife Irina Mikhailovna Raievskya (1892–1955). His father assumed the title Duke of Mecklenburg with the style Serene Highness following his adoption by the head of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and his uncle Duke Charles Michael.

He is the second child and elder son of Duke Borwin and Duchess Alice.
Duke Georg Alexander studied law at the University of Freiburg and trained as a bank clerk. In 1963, with his wife and youngest child Duke Borwin, Duke Georg Alexander moved to Ireland in order to manage the Culleen House estate, near Mullingar in County Westmeath, for one of his brother-in-law Hassan Sayed Kamil’s Swiss businesses.
