Occupation listed as Independent. « on: Friday 25 March 11 15:22 GMT (UK) ». While looking for an individual (relative) in the Scottish 1841 census I came across what I thought to be unusual. Under occupation is shown Independent. Can anyone explain this occupation or is this in reference to his living arrangement?

Montieth Row, Calton, Glasgow. My great, great grandparents were married at 32 Montieth Row, Calton, Glasgow in 1865 by a minister of the Free Church of Scotland. I notice other forum users mention their relatives were married at 30 Montieth Row and 33 Montieth Row around the same era. Sadly, the row of buildings is now demolished.

Widow and 2 unmarried daughters had "Independent" as occupation on 1841 census, meaning they had private income. 3xGGF had ceased to be a gentleman by 1841 and was a shopkeeper.
Also the 'grandparent' who attended Highfield may have died or had less influence. The Highfield Independent Chapel stands tall and proud as ever.
