The first SavaCentre opened at The Galleries, Washington, Tyne and Wear, on 15 November 1977, with 70,000 sq ft (6,500 m 2) of sales area, and the slogan "The store with more for less.". This store was extended by a further 10,000 sq ft (930 m 2 ) to 80,000 sq ft (7,400 m 2 ) in 1986.

1977: First Savacentre in Washington, Tyne and Wear Sainsbury's 1,000th store opened today in Irvine, Ayrshire. From Sainsbury's first store in Drury Lane, opened in 1869, the retailer now has 576 supermarkets and 424 convenience stores across the UK, serving 22 million customers each week and employing around 150,000 colleagues.

What may seem commonplace now was groundbreaking in 1978 as there were very few other out of town shopping centres of this size at the time. Hempstead Valley was the second Savacentre (Washington Tyne & Wear opened in 1977). At the time of opening Savacentre was one of the largest out of town shopping centres in the South East.
