If the phone is locked, it has to be one from the carrier the device is locked to. It shouldn't be necessary for you to purchase one, unless you threw away the one you had before.

Alignment is a bit tricky since the micro sim has *less* contact pads than a 'normal' sim card but I have been using my sim card for quite some time now (and in my Bold 9700 before) without any problems. The thickness is the same so no worries.
