Start at the Fort Monroe Visitor and Education Center at 30 Ingalls Road. Pick up a map, a few brochures, and the Walking Tour Guide. Pick up your free ticket to visit the Casemate Museum. Spend some time in the interpretive galleries.

Fort Monroe was started in 1819 and largely completed by 1834. Between the engineers building the fort and the Artillery School of Practice based at the fort in those years, many officers and their families rotated through Fort Monroe.
