Hellboy movies aren't really supposed to be very "deep". They've got enough background to give the sense of a whole world. But on the whole, they're fairly shallow. What gets them by is "fun". If you look at the films for some deeper meaning, "You Are Doing It Wrong". Also, the overview is wrong. Krauss wasn't done by Thomas Kretschmann.

When Prince Nuada ( Luke Goss) releases the Tree Elemental into the streets, Hellboy goes and grabs "Big Baby", a surprisingly even bigger handcannon in his arsenal than the Samaritan to take it on. It appears to be a six shot that fires two rounds at a time. Before firing it, he winds up the music box in the back, apparently to please Big Baby.
Hellboy II: The Golden Army moves on to an even higher level entertainment than the original tongue in cheek production of the first Hellboy film. Hellboy is working for a secret government agency dealing with paranormal phenomenon when a demon prince invades an art auction and steals a piece of a magical crown.
