The band's breakthrough was a support slot at Eric Clapton's comeback concert in 1973. MCA Records released their debut album, Show Your Hand (1973), which sold poorly. Bruce McCaskill, who was Clapton's tour manager, liked the band's music and agreed to manage them. He borrowed money to take them to the US and to promote them.

1996 was a somewhat quiet year for the band. After touring with Helpyourselfish through most of 1995, D:A:D was back home. In fact, the band only did one live show that year: Roskilde Festival. To make it special the band had invited 200 fans to join them on stage for the full length of the show.
