Aug 22, 2024 · Bute then commissioned Burges to rebuild Castell Coch in a Gothic Revival style in 1868. It would be a commission of a lifetime! Burges had a fanciful and elaborate vision of a medieval fairytale castle but with some contemporary Gothic additions.

Wales was not part of the Norman invasion of England in 1066 but by the 1080s the Normans and William I did start to turn their attention towards Wales and began co-ordinated and assertive incursions.
Castell Coch is a 19th-century Gothic Revival castle built above the village of Tongwynlais in South Wales. The first castle on the site was built by the Normans after 1081, to protect the newly conquered town of Cardiff and control the route along the Taff Gorge.
