When Chaney Jr. initially appeared on screen during the turpentine camp sequence, there was an immediate burst of sustained applause.

I imagined what would Lon Chaney Jr. might look like had he been given the opportunity to revisit his dad's character for the 1939 version of HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. I know he did the "Route 66" thing, but that makeup seemed more geared for horror than for character.

In 1969, Chaney Jr did a film in Texas called THE STRANGER IN TOWN. - The internet has been close to no help and, as far as I can tell, it's a lost film. About a year ago I bought 70-80 negatives from the son of the sound man/still photographer on the film, Jim Crow. One is shown below... Chaney looks a bit rough, to say the least.
