It was occupied in 1847 by U.S. forces during the Mexican War.

The city is officially called Puebla de Zaragoza, after the general who won the Cinco de Mayo Battle. However, most people call it Puebla de los Angeles (its original name based on a legend) and some even Angelopolis.
The foundation of Puebla begins with a letter from the bishop of Tlaxcala in 1530, Julián Garcés, to the Spanish queen outlining the need for a Spanish settlement between Mexico City and the port of Veracruz. [ 8 ] According to legend, the bishop had a dream about where to build the city.
History. The first inhabitants arrived nine thousand years ago in the territory that is now Puebla, in the region of Tehuacan. In pre-Hispanic times, it was the settlement of cities of great importance, such as Cantona and Cholula, and was the home of the Mexica, Tolteca, Olmeca, Totonaca, Nahua, Mixteca, Zapoteca and Otomí cultures.
