During this time, Busiek had many letters published in comic book letter columns, and originated the theory that the Phoenix was a separate being who had impersonated Jean Grey, and that therefore Grey had not died — a premise which made its way from freelancer to freelancer, and which was eventually used in the comics.
It makes sense, Busiek had some dramatic turns in Astro City but never did “dark” just to be dark. If he was a giant Xmen fan, pulling Jean down to a villain and then killing her was probably anathema to him.
Don't get me wrong, Busiek is one of my favourite writers, but he's ranting nonstop for four pages. Truth be told he's right about two things: Claremont made Jean so overpowered that she overshadowed the rest of the team and he didn't know what to do with her character.

Fun fact: it was Busiek who pitched the idea of resurrecting Jean instead of using her sister when X-Factor launched in 86. This drove Claremont up the wall, because it was editorial who forced him to kill her at the end of the DPS.
