Mar 5, 2011 · Titling her play most appropriately, Valerie Goodwin wrote The Magdalen Whitewash about one such institution. Goodwin, along with other playwrights, filmmakers, musicians and poets, chronicled the horrors when the public was made "aware" in 1993.
Valerie has won awards in Dallas, Texas in 2011 and Manchester in 2019 for her play The Magdalen Whitewash, which has been performed in Australia, America and all over the UK and Ireland. Other plays by Valerie include adaptations of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, most of Shakespeare and other classics, including Jane Eyre.
Pregnancy, in most cases; but some girls were transferred there from orphanages, some were deemed to be a threat, or at risk of falling prey to lust. The play focuses on eight of these 'Maggies', their stories, and their attempts to leave the laundry.
In 1946, teenage Nancy tracks down her birth mother Mary to one of the many 'Magdalen laundries' set up in Ireland to house women shunned by society for unmarried pregnancies. But why doesn't Mary want to leave with Nancy?
