Jun 27, 2018 · The English-Mohegan alliance also spurred conflict between the Mohegans and the nearby Narragansetts. In 1643 the two tribes fought the Battle of the Great Plain in Norwich, resulting in the execution of the Narragansett Sachem Miantonomo at the insistence of colonial leaders.
In 1638, Miantonomo signed a treaty between the Narragansetts, the Connecticut colonists and the Mohegan. However, the Narragansett and the Mohegans disagreed over who should control the Pequot people and land.
The Mohegans were an Algonquian-speaking people, who at the time of contact with the Europeans were unified with the Pequot. A dispute between two Pequot sachems, Sassacus and Uncas, caused the two groups to separate. Uncas (1598-1683) and his followers called themselves the Mohegan, or Wolf People. He was born near the Thames River.
