Sep 26, 2024 · David Hume, Scottish philosopher, historian, economist, and essayist known especially for his philosophical empiricism and skepticism. Despite the enduring impact of his theory of knowledge, Hume seems to have considered himself chiefly as a moralist.
The best theologian he ever met, he used to say, was the old Edinburgh fishwife who, having recognized him as Hume the atheist, refused to pull him out of the bog into which he had fallen until he declared he was a Christian and repeated the Lord's prayer.

David Hume, (born May 7, 1711, Edinburgh, Scot.—died Aug. 25, 1776, Edinburgh), Scottish philosopher, historian, and economist. He conceived of philosophy as the inductive, experimental science of human nature.
Between 1740 and his death in 1776 Hume worked on and published (in various forms) essays on moral, political, and literary matters. In 1752, as Librarian for the Faculty of Advocates in Edinburgh, Hume began research on his History of England, which he published between 1754 and 1761.
