- Weathering the storm. Ariel and Eric's love story begins with a casual near-death experience. Played by Grammy nominee Halle Bailey, the titular Little Mermaid of Disney's live-action/CG reimagining saves the land-dwelling prince (Jonah Hauer-King) from drowning in a shipwreck one dark and stormy night.

- Jonah Hauer-King as Eric. The son of Queen Selina and a prince who is saved from drowning by a mysterious girl. Hauer-King is best known for starring in several TV miniseries, including “Howard’s End,” “Little Women” and “World on Fire.”
- Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. A powerful sea witch whose lower body is an octopus who seeks to steal Ariel’s voice. Melissa McCarthy is a comedian who has had memorable turns in “Mike & Molly” (for which she won an Emmy), “Bridesmaids” (for which she was nominated for an Oscar) and “Identity Theft.”
- Awkwafina as Scuttle. A female diving bird (changed from a male seagull from the animated film) and a friend of Ariel’s who incorrectly describes the surface world.
