TONY ROCHE FRENG FIMECHE. 177th President of the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers 2024. Founded in 1771 by John Smeaton and seven other engineers, we are the oldest engineering organisation in the World.
The leading light of the new Society was John Smeaton who was the first engineer to describe himself as a "Civil Engineer", having coined the term to distinguish himself from the military engineers graduating from the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. [2]
Smeaton (1724-1792) hailed from Leeds and initially trained and worked in London as an instrument maker, but by his early 30s was making a name as an experimental scientist and improver of mills and steam engines.
John Smeaton, the “father of civil engineering”, designed the new Eddystone Lighthouse, also known as Smeaton’s Tower, off the coast of Plymouth, after it was destroyed by a fire in December 1755.
