- Prof Chris Redman was a world renowned pioneer in maternity care, making breakthroughs in cases concerning pre-eclampsia at the John Radcliffe Hospital. He set up a dedicated maternal medicine department known as the Silver Star Unit, and the model has been replicated worldwide. The unit cares for about 500 women a year.

Chris Redman was a global pioneer in maternity care. His research into pre-eclampsia was seminal to our understanding of the disease. From 1970, Chris investigated the pathogenesis, detection, prevention, and treatment of pre-eclampsia.
Chris Redman was a brilliantly insightful and humane doctor, a pioneering scientist and a wonderful human being: kind, caring, honest and often funny. Despite his manifold skills and accomplishments, he was consistently self-effacing, never seeking any praise, public acknowledgment or material advantage for himself.
A physician by training, he was perhaps the first to realise the importance of medical illness as risks to maternal and fetal safety: both pre-existing illness and disease unique to pregnancy, particularly pre-eclampsia, on which he became the world leader.
