Edith Jessie Thompson (25 December 1893 – 9 January 1923) and Frederick Edward Francis Bywaters (27 June 1902 – 9 January 1923) were a British couple executed for the murder of Thompson's husband Percy. May 28, 2021 · The Thompson – Bywaters case involved the murder of Percy Thompson by Edith Thompson and Frederick Bywaters. The dead man’s widow Edith Thompson was found guilty of murder by the common law legal doctrine of “Common Purpose”; where someone who incites and encourages the murder of a person is just as guilty as the person who struck the fatal blow.
