Queen's College, Belfast, opened in 1849. [7] Its main building, the Lanyon Building, was designed by the English-born architect, Sir Charles Lanyon. At its opening, it had 23 professors and 195 students. [8] Some early students at Queen's University Belfast took University of London examinations.

His design borrows from the Gothic and Tudor character of the great medieval universities, and in particular from Magdalen College, Oxford.

Lanyon designed the main building of Queen's University of Belfast in 1849, the design for the central tower was based on Magdalen College in Oxford, and is repeated in the smaller towers. The back of the building is not as intricate as the front, as the college had problems with funding.
