Nightfall. (1956 film) Nightfall is a 1956 American crime film noir directed by Jacques Tourneur and starring Aldo Ray, Brian Keith and Anne Bancroft. [1] The low-budget film is remembered today for camera work by cinematographer Burnett Guffey. It uses flashbacks as a device to tell the story, which was based on a 1948 novel by David Goodis.

Certainly the reasons for Nightfall’s lack of standing in the world of film noir is a mystery. This is a wonderfully taut melodrama full of stylish and atmospheric moments, the kind we expect from its director, Jacques Tourneur, whose CV also includes Cat People , I Walked with a Zombie , Out of the Past and my personal favourite, Night of the Demon , one of the finest horror movies ever made.

Two hunters, James Vanning (Aldo Ray) and Dr. Edward Gurston (Frank Albertson), have a chance encounter with two bank robbers, John (Brian Keith) and Red (Rudy Bond), in Wyoming, leading to murder.
