Cornelius was an evolved chimpanzee, the youngest son of the late Caesar and the late Cornelia, and the younger brother of the late Blue Eyes. Through his father, Cornelius was the youngest grandson of the late Bright Eyes and the late Alpha. He was second-in-line to inherit the colony after his older brother.

Following the deaths of his parents and brother, Cornelius is now the sole heir to Caesar's throne.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

One day following the decade the apes left the city and thrived in the Muir Woods, Caesar returned home from a hunt to learn his wife Cornelia was in labor. Caesar rushed to his tree just in time to be by Cornelia's side as she gave birth, which came with complications, unlike Blue Eyes' birth, to their newborn baby boy. The baby, later named Cornelius, cried as he gasped his first breath and was placed in his mother's arms. His father and mother gazed at him with happiness, then turned to see his elder brother, who was scarred by a wild bear, enter the tree to see his newborn brother as their parents continued to touch Cornelius so he could know they were his parents. As a newborn, Cornelius slept most of the time with his mother, who was developing complications after childbirth. One day, Cornelius and his mother were sleeping when a gunshot was heard throughout the forest, waking up Caesar, who investigated with a large troop of apes and discovered a group of humans standing in front of Blue Eyes and Ash, Rocket's son, who the latter was shot by one of the humans. The next night, after Caesar made a deal with the group of humans, consisting of Malcolm, Ellie, Alexander, Carver, Foster, and Kemp, he returned and saw Cornelius sleeping while Cornelia was breathing heavily, which worried Caesar, but she assured him that she just needed to rest. Caesar then looked at Cornelius because he was worried that the humans' presence could put him and the tribe in danger, which Cornelia understood. At dawn, Caesar and Blue Eyes took Cornelius, so Cornelia could rest and arrived at the site of the hydroelectric dam as Malcolm's group began their work to fix it and restore power to the ruins of San Francisco. Along with Rocket and the orangutan Maurice, Caesar and Blue-Eyes, who was holding Cornelius, stood guard until Caesar noticed that the bonobo Koba was not present. Cornelius, fully awake, took in his surroundings while in his brother's arms. During their work, Malcolm's group detonated an explosive to clear the inside of the dam, which trapped them at the same time. Rocket, Ash, and a gorilla named Luca enter the dam and save them, taking them outside so Ellie can treat Carver and the rest can clean themselves of the dirt. Cornelius was intrigued by the humans' presence and jumped out of his brother's arms while Malcolm thanked Caesar and explained what else his group should do. Cornelius climbed up Ellie's back to get a better look at them before moving in front of Alexander's knee. He looked at both Ellie and Alexander who began to connect with the young ape until he lowered himself to the ground and examined Alexander's shoe before heading to an open case. While rummaging through the contents of the case, he discovered a shotgun, which Carver kept hidden since the agreement between Malcolm and Caesar was that the group could stay if they surrendered all the weapons they had. Carver, who saw Cornelius, jumped up and yelled at him to get off the case, angering Blue Eyes and forcing him to attack the human. Cornelius got off the case and ran for cover while Blue Eyes held off Foster and Kemp as they tried to take out Carver, who took the gun and pointed it at Blue Eyes, surprising everyone until Caesar disarmed Carver. Sensing his unintentional deception, Caesar threw the weapon into the lake and grabbed Cornelius as he ran towards his father, who yelled at Malcolm to leave. Returning to their village, Caesar and Blue-Eyes were approached by a panicked Sparrow, one of Cornelia's midwives, who revealed that Cornelia had taken a turn for the worse. Caesar and Blue Eyes, holding a sleeping Cornelius, ran to their tree to see Tinker and a midwife at Cornelia's side, whose breathing worsened and she became unresponsive. Both Cornelius' father and brother stood by Cornelia until Rocket mentioned Malcolm and Ellie, who apologized and made a new agreement: Ellie would help Cornelia with antibiotics and Caesar would allow Malcolm's group to stay, but for a day and Carver being taken out of the forest and away from the apes while they help Malcolm's group repair the dam, angering Cornelius' brother. The next night, Cornelius's mother made a full recovery and emerged from Caesar's tree with Cornelius in her arms. Caesar, who allowed Malcolm's group, excluding Carver, to enter their village and watch the city lights come back on when they fixed the dam and restored power, approached her and they hugged before leading her little son to look at the lights. Standing near a cliff in the right corner of the tree roots, Cornelius stayed with his mother as she made her way towards Blue Eyes, who hugged her happy to see her okay until Caesar was shot by Koba lurking in the darkness after being humiliated by Caesar and deemed to care more about humans than his kind, he fell off the cliff. Cornelius was startled when Cornelia and Blue-Eyes called out to Caesar, and then the entire village started burning, which was secretly caused by Stone. After Koba came and lied that the humans killed Caesar and set fire to the village, he declared war on the humans in the city but decreed that the child and female apes stay in the forest while the men headed to the forest city. Two nights later, Cornelius and Cornelia headed to the city when Koba summoned them. At dawn, all the women and children arrived at the colony, an unfinished building where the surviving humans lived, and learned that some apes died from an explosive set off by the colony's leader. Blue Eyes found the sleeping Cornelius and his mother and brought them to Caesar, who survived Koba's attempt. Cornelius's father, mother, and brother embraced each other before Caesar reasserted his dominance over the tribe and made preparations for war while Malcolm informed Caesar that a military group was coming to San Francisco.

War for the Planet of the Apes

Cornelius, now two years old, has learned the concept of war as his tribe fought with Alpha-Omega for the past two years while seeking refuge in a secret cave system hidden in a waterfall. One day, when his father was returning home with a troop of injured apes, Cornelius was walking with his mother Cornelia, who was surprised and happy to see Blue Eyes and Rocket, who had returned from their trip to find a new home for the tribe. As Cornelia hugged her eldest son, Cornelius ran to his father, grabbing his hand as he did not remember his brother due to his absence for two years, and hesitated to greet him when Blue Eyes turned to greet him. His mother helps Cornelius remember Blue Eyes as Caesar picks him up and cradles him, allowing Cornelius to nervously wave at his estranged brother before his mother directs Blue Eyes toward his wife Lake. As Blue Eyes and Lake hug each other, Cornelius watches his father cradle his mother as both parents are happy to see their son return safely. At night, Cornelius stayed with his mother while she participated in a council with his father, Blue Eyes, Lake, Rocket, Spear, the orangutans Maurice and Percy, and the gorillas Luca and Winter, the only albino in the tribe. Cornelius curiously examined a map his older brother presented to him as he explained that it led to their new home: an untouched oasis hidden by a mountain range. Cornelius was then dragged back near his mother before she asked Blue Eyes what was beyond the mountains as Cornelius grabbed her leg. Blue Eyes grabbed one of Rocket's satchels and pulled out sand, which Cornelius attempted to take some from Lake's hand, and Blue Eyes revealed that a vast desert lies beyond the mountains, which serves as the perfect cover to prevent humans looking for the tribe there. Cornelius then fell asleep while Winter argued for the tribe to leave tonight, but Caesar and Blue Eyes decreed that they were not ready and that moving now would put the entire tribe in danger, and Caesar assured all the apes that they would leave the tribe forest safe and sound as long as they stay together. Later that night, Cornelius, sleeping with his mother and brother while his father stayed up to examine the map, hooted in his sleep, causing Caesar to rub his sleeping son's head. Cornelius and Cornelia were awakened by their brother, who revealed to them that danger had arrived. Cornelius and his mother were behind Blue Eyes when he saw a female soldier emerging from a cavern beneath her nest. Cornelia kept Cornelius crouched as the soldier made his way around the rock pillar supporting her nest, leaving her exposed for Blue-Eyes to knock her to the ground before beating her to death while Cornelia hid Cornelius in a deep hiding place at the base of the pillar of rock in the back. As he stood still, Cornelius watched in horror as gunshots exploded at the base of the large cavern, followed by his brother and mother falling near the body of the female soldier, both dead, traumatizing the young ape. Horrified, Cornelius stood still as the killer radioed that the ape leader was dead, and Cornelius did nothing to see what happened next: unbeknownst to him, his father returned to the opening to see the killer, Colonel McCullough, preparing to leave and his wife and eldest son dead, angering Caesar to go after the killer, followed by more apes emerging from one of the tunnels. As the group of apes, with Luca, Spear, Rocket, and Maurice set off in search of Cornelius, who, for them, was unaccounted for, leaving Caesar devastated looking at the scene of his family's death. Hearing his father breathe angrily, Cornelius decided to reveal himself, to which his father was relieved to see him alive and opened his arms, and Cornelius ran to him and hugged him, crying in sadness as Caesar assured him that he was safe. In the morning, Cornelius walked with his father among the tribe, who were preparing to leave because their refuge was compromised, on the shore of the lake. Caesar approached a distraught Lake and tasked her with taking care of Cornelius because he was not traveling with the tribe to the oasis. Cornelius whines to his father not to leave but decides to obey his father as he walks to Lake's side. He then saw Maurice talking to Caesar, who he realized was going after the soldiers, but Caesar revealed that he would go after the colonel to kill him, and Maurice told Caesar that the tribe couldn't leave without him. Caesar told Maurice that they had to do it because the soldiers could return in full force. Cornelius, crying, called out to his father as Lake tried to calm him down; Caesar then revealed that he planned to divert the soldiers, leaving the entire tribe a chance to leave the forest before leaving. Cornelius cries with the tribe when Caesar disappears into the forest, followed by Maurice, Luca, and Rocket who decide to accompany him. To their horror, as they left the forest, the tribe was intercepted by Alpha-Omega and were prepared to kill the apes until the Colonel stopped them and made all the apes return to their base on the northern California border. Once the tribe was brought to the Alpha-Omega base, a former weapons silo that was turned into a relocation facility during the Simian Flu Pandemic. Cornelius and the other ape children were separated from the adult apes when they were forced to build a wall. Days later, Cornelius was shocked to see his father, who found the Colonel's base, and was horrified to see that his tribe had been captured, led to the pin of adult apes chained by the Colonel himself, a soldier, and a Donkey. Cornelius called his father, which caught the colonel's attention, who did not know that Caesar still had one more son. Caesar showed no recognition to his son as he wanted to protect him from death and the colonel overruled him and had the soldier and the Donkey place Caesar on the pin. After they left, Cornelius cried and called out to his father, trying to reach him through the bars. For the next three days, Cornelius and the other children watched as the soldiers and Donkeys terrorized the adults and forced them to work, until one day Caesar, Rocket, and Maurice, who were hiding outside the base, devised a plan to free the apes and abandon the base, as Caesar discovers that an army from the north is coming to fight Alpha-Omega. On the third night, Caesar and Rocket managed to acquire the key to the pins and slip into the children's pin, as the tunnel they dug underneath began to flood and began to bring them together. When Cornelius woke up, he turned around and saw his father, bruised and scarred, standing and hugged him, happy to be reunited with him. Caesar and Rocket guide the ape children to climb the wires above the pins, high enough from the soldiers' sights, and jump towards the adult pins, with Cornelius clinging to his father's back while he and Rocket returned to the adults' pin and made a hole in the ground. Cornelius was the first to be saved by Maurice, who was assisted by a mute human girl and a talking chimpanzee and led him through a tunnel beneath the base and outside. As most of the children were led into the forest near the base, the northern army arrived and opened fire on the base. As dawn approached, Cornelius, with Lake, Maurice, and a mute human girl named Nova, watched as the opposing human armies massacred each other until the base exploded, allowing the northern army to infiltrate the base. Cornelius wondered where his father was until Maurice, who noticed an avalanche caused by the explosion, ordered him and all the ape children to climb the trees. Clinging to a tree with Lake, Cornelius braved the avalanche until it stopped, burying the entire base and killing both the Northern Army and the surviving Alpha-Omega. Cornelius turned towards Rocket's hooting to see his father alive and hanging from a tree, who was also relieved and happy to see the remaining members of his tribe alive. Days after the tribe left the base and resumed their journey, Cornelius, in his father's arms, witnessed the oasis and all the children and adult apes began walking towards it. Cornelius saw Nova, who looked at him, and hid nervously next to her father until he gestured for him to come to her, which he did and walked with her and the talking chimpanzee Bad Ape, who joined him they. Cornelius then grew fond of them and played, looking at his father happily and continuing to play, unaware that his father was dying from a fatal wound and was not aware when the tribe became aware of his passing by Maurice's cries.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Cornelius appeared in the flashback where he, Lake, Maurice, Rocket and the other colony members are attending his late father's funeral. After Caesar's corpse is burned, he remained by Lake's side as he gazed on to Maurice, Rocket and the apes signed 'Apes together strong' while his father's ashes flew into the air.

Cornelius had a typical appearance of a chimpanzee infant, having black fur and tan skin, lacking teeth, and possessed an amalgam of his parents' facial features. A trait he inherited from his mother is the parting of the hair on top of his head. He inherited his parents' green eyes. At the age of two in War, Cornelius' hair is slightly lighter tha...

•Genius-Level Intellect: As the son of an evolved ape and an altered ape, Cornelius has a high level of intelligence; because his parents inhaled the ALZ-113 early in their life, Cornelius has a higher level of intelligence than both of his parents combined. Cornelius, along with his older brother Blue Eyes, is the most evolved ape in the entire San Francisco Ape Colony.

•Speech: As the second son of an evolved chimpanzee and an altered chimpanzee, Cornelius was born with the latent ability of speech, which remained innate due to being young.

•Like his parents, but unlike his older brother, Cornelius has green eyes.

•Cornelius and Blue Eyes do not seem to possess the shooting star birthmark their father and paternal grandfather hold.

•Cornelius is named after Roddy McDowall's and David Watson's Cornelius I and Bobby Porter's Cornelius II from Planet of the Apes, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, and Battle for the Planet of the Apes.

•Cornelius was mentioned at Comic Con 2013 by Andy Serkis and director Matt Reeves, but without his name.

•Cornelius was mentioned again by Andy Serkis during an interview at CinemaCon. One of the scenes shown at the Fox screening was the festivities involving Cornelia, seen wearing a crown of flowers, having just given birth to this child.

•Until the release of War for the Planet of the Apes: Revelations, Cornelius went under the name Milo. During that period, there was speculation from one entertainment site that this infant's name could be Cornelius. Another site has suggested the name Milo and that the baby could be considered the equivalent to Roddy McDowall's Caesar when he was born as Milo in Escape from the Planet of the Apes.

•It was confirmed by Andy Serkis in an interview with USA Today that the baby was a boy

•In the over-all Planet of the Apes franchise, Cornelius' birth is the third recorded ape infant. The first was Milo (later known as Caesar), who was born in Escape from the Planet of the Apes. The second was Milo's father, Caesar, who was born off-screen in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
