MercyMe is an American contemporary Christian music band founded in Edmond, Oklahoma. The band consists of lead vocalist Bart Millard , percussionist Robby Shaffer, bassist Nathan Cochran and guitarists Michael Scheuchzer and Barry Graul.
May 1, 2019 · MercyMe started out in 1994 as just a bunch of guys who loved music, loved the Lord and wanted to be able to support their families playing music for and about Jesus. Several Dove Awards, a few albums and over six million + CD and DVD sales later, a lot has changed.
MercyMe, formed in 1994, released six independent albums from 1995–2000 before signing with INO Records and releasing their major label debut album, Almost There (2001). Almost There peaked at No. 37 on the Billboard 200 [2] and No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart. [3]
- Undone’s almost done. The guys are currently putting the finishing touches on their upcoming album, "Undone" (INO), working again with producer Pete Kipley (Plus One, Rebecca St. James), who Mike lauds for “bringing a new level of creativity and a fresh look at the music.”
- Words to live by. “It’s easy to substitute your time on stage or ministering for your personal time with God, [but] it’s easier to find time [to be quiet with God] if you’re looking for it,” Robby observes.
- They’ve got mail. Since their exposure skyrocketed, so has their fan mail. “Before 'Almost There,' we received a ton of mail. Now it’s like 20 tons — give or take a ton,” estimates Bart.
- Picture perfect. While on the red carpet, Jim’s wife, Misti, introduced herself to Randy Owens, lead singer of 22-time AMA winners Alabama, by saying they shared a home state.
In 1994 he went on a missionary trip to Europe, leading worship groups composed of the children of United States military personnel. Another member of the mission was future MercyMe keyboardist Jim Bryson. The reactions of the young audiences for whom Millard and Bryson performed made him begin to think seriously about a musical career.
