Burke's early experiences behind the drum kit began in the late 1960s and early 1970s as one of the founding members of Bayonne, New Jersey's premier cover bands, Total Environment and Sweet Willie Jam Band. Burke also gained percussion knowledge from his stint as a drummer in the famed Saint Andrew Bridgmen Drum and Bugle Corps in Bayonne.

Even though he had shown interest in drumming from an early age, it was not until the 1960s and early 70s that his experiences behind the drum kit became apparent.
Burke was the drummer for the group Chequered Past from 1982 to 1984. Moreover, Clem was the drummer for the Eurythmics throughout the 80s; he's featured on three albums by the Eurythmics and appeared as part of the band at the Free Nelson Mandela concert in 1988.
