Odeon Cinemas Limited, [1] trading as Odeon (stylised in all caps), is a cinema brand name operating in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Norway, which along with UCI Cinemas and Nordic Cinema Group is part of the Odeon Cinemas Group subsidiary of AMC Theatres. It uses the famous name of the Odeon cinema circuit first introduced in Great Britain in 1930.
The company began in 1979 as Pan-Canadian Film Distributors, a partnership between film producer Garth Drabinsky and inventor Nat Taylor, [1] based in Toronto, Ontario. [2] At the time of its establishment in the United States, the Cineplex Odeon theatre chain and the tie-in studio were owned by the MCA entertainment group, also the then-owners of Universal Pictures. The only locations I know of that still have the Cineplex Odeon branding (purple 4-ringed logo, not just the name) is Cineplex Odeon Eau Claire Market and Cineplex Odeon Grande Prairie. The oldest operating location to my knowledge is Cineplex Odeon Victoria , which opened as Odeon in 1948 and has been operating non-stop since, throughout all of the corporate mergers.
