The History of Penistone Grammar School. The school was founded as the Free Grammar School of Penistone in 1392, when it is recorded that a gift of land was made by John Clarel, Lord of the Manor at Penistone, for the purpose of a school.
In 1856, School Terrace was built, which stands to this day (on Church Street), and the vast majority of which remains the property of the school’s Foundation. 1892 saw the school’s 500-year anniversary celebrated, a tradition continued with a 600-year celebration in 1992.
