Joe Burman (11 December 1898– 8 April 1979) was a British born American boxer who was briefly awarded the World bantamweight championship by the New York State Athletic Commission, when reigning champion Joe Lynch cancelled a bout with him scheduled for October 19, 1923.

Burman, of Hebrew heritage, defeated five world champions, Pete Herman, Sammy Mandell, Joe Lynch, Charles Ledoux, and Johnny McCoy. He was bantamweight world champion for just one day, probably the shortest title reign in boxing history.
Burman won the newspaper decision (Philadelphia Record). However the Philadelphia Public Ledger (Paul Zabala) had Murray winning and the Inquirer (Jack Kincaid) called it a draw. Burman's supposed fight with Johnny Mealey on February 21 appears to be a duplication of this fight.

Nov 14, 2023 · The Louis/Burman fight took place on January 31, 1941 at Madison Square Garden. It was not felt Red would be able to put up much of a battle against the Brown Bomber, but he surprised everyone, Louis included.
Although Burman never did get a title shot, he fought against the top fighters of his day, including Abe Goldstein. Burman and Goldstein (the future world bantamweight champ) squared off in 1923, with Goldstein winning the 13-round decision.
